Nature & Culture

In the spectacular alpine scenery of the Dolomites, designated a UNESCO Natural Heritage in 2009, a unique and unrepeatable natural setting is awaiting you and your next summer or winter vacation.

Alta Pusteria also has lots to offer in terms of culture. The Bohemian composer Gustav Mahler spent summers from 1908 to 1910 in Carbonin Vecchia near Dobbiaco, and among other works, composed his famous “Canto della Terra” there (“The Song of the Earth”). The Gustav Mahler Music Weeks are held every summer in commemoration. Alta Pusteria is also incredibly rich in architectural monuments and works of art of remarkable historical significance. The San Candido Monastery Church, with its imposing tower, dramatic wooden sculpture of the Crucifixion, crypt, and frescoes by Michael Pacher, is certainly one of the most handsome religious buildings in Romanic style in the entire Eastern Alps. Also worthy of note is the Rudolf Stolz Museum in the nearby village of Sesto, where 160 works of the famous painter can be admired. The history of tourism in the area is documented in the “Haus Wassermann” Tourism Museum in Villabassa.
