Christmas fairs, Krampus and Ski Cross World Cup
Normally already at the end of November the season of the Alpine Christkindlmärkte Christmas markets with their unique charm starts in South Tyrol and some of them go on until Epiphany on 6 January. Whether Italy’s biggest Christmas market in Bozen, the picturesque Christmas market in the spa town of Meran, the market in the town of Brixen outside the magnificent cathedral, or in the attractive town of Sterzing with its connections with the Fugger banking dynasty or in the nearby Bruneck on the River Rienz with its amazing choice of culinary delicacies and traditional handmade goods – visitors are guaranteed romantic Advent magic in South Tyrol’s Christmas markets.
In many places in the Hochpustertal valley, the Feast of Saint Nicholas on 6 December is celebrated with processions. Accompanied by children dressed as golden angels and his servant Knecht Ruprecht, Saint Nicholas rewards children with sweetmeats and fruit. Naughty children (and adults) are on the other hand pursued on the same day and the next one by the Krampusse. These fearsome creatures ring their bells loud and roam the streets in gigantic carved masks and disguises made of heavy animal skins to frighten anybody who dares to go outside.
In many places it is a dare for children to tease the Krampusse without getting caught and beaten with their birch rods. The biggest and oldest Krampus gathering is in Toblach where about 250 Krampusse and other monsters occupy the centre of the village for an entire evening.
The build-up to the Ski Cross World Cup Season is really spectacular. It has taken place for several years just before Christmas on the Haunoldpiste run in Innichen. Around 120 skiers take place in the competition in groups of 4 in a series of eliminations where they have to negotiate the jumps, ridges and bends that have been built into the downhill run.
Our reception desk will be pleased to provide you with information about the events. We look forward to your enquiries.
