Original activities in the Three Peaks (Drei Zinnen) ski area
The yearly appointment in March on the Helm is called «Helmissimo» and is the longest giant slalom in the Pustertal. It starts from the mountain station on the Helm at 2030 m and ends, after a course of more than 100 gates and about 4.5 km, near the valley station of Vierschach at 1125 m. The fastest athletes, who every year include famous names, complete this demanding race in just over 3 minutes.
The Three Peaks Ski Raid has also been held at the end of March for several years; this is a downhill ski race for men and women with lots of stamina, in the heart of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The course is 13.5 km long, with a difference in height of 1415 metres. From the Fischleinbodenhütte hut (1454 m) to Sexten they go first to the Talschlusshütte Hut, then the Zsigmondy-Comici (2224 m) and Büllelejochhütte (2528 m) huts. On skis, the participants make a first descent to the Bödenseen (2215 m), where the last demanding climb begins, carrying their skis on their shoulders, up to the Sextnerstein at 2539 m, before going back down to the valley. For this extreme ski mountaineering competition, appreciated also for the beauty of the countryside, the most skilled competitors take less than two hours.
Perfectly in keeping with the Three Peaks is the “DoloMythos” museum in the centre of Innichen, open all year round, a little gem for lovers of culture and science. In an exciting trip back in time, the visitor discovers the origin of the Dolomites – and that’s not all. Original finds and fascinating reconstructions recall the presence of dinosaurs, cave bears and the fossils of rare plants. As well as the original replicas of the most important figures of Dolomite legends, families with children will also enjoy the treasure hunt, with crystals, gold and miniature dinosaurs as a prize for the lucky winners.
